VASHON HOUSE
In this home, Denise and I look at ways of designing a small sustainable home on a large parcel of land, siting the structure with room to grow both new structures and a garden. Denise's professional work included project management for the restoration of Duwamish creek. With this in mind we set out to complement the environment of her site. We designed light metal roofs to extend beyond the structure and shed water to holding ponds used for irrigation. Large plant urns are designed as part of the roof-scape. Recycled timbers and exposed floor framing bring texture and a natural warmth to the interiors. Heating costs are reduced with the use of a hydronic in-floor heating system and thickened R-30 insulated exterior walls. I am particularly fond of the high ceilings, which make a small home feel large.
